The "aw shucks" is annoying. The "doggones" are nauseating. But the insertion of eshatological cliches in policy debates is galling. Bob Herbert sums it up well in today's New York Times. In an exchange with Biden ostensibly about education, SarPa offered this gem "You mentioned education, and I’m glad you did. I know education you are passionate about with your wife being a teacher for 30 years, and God bless her. Her reward is in heaven, right?” It was better when they weren't mentioning God. So much better. If McCain is elected, this woman could be president. Aw shucks, let that reward sink in.
